STEP Camp Skills Workshops
July 10 & 11, 2018

Learn and have fun! Over the 2 days of STEP Camp, students will explore 4 technical areas of interest, learn about technology and practice proper tool and equipment usage and safety techniques.

When registering your child, you will be required to PICK 4 Workshops from options listed below.

*Please note: Enrollment for STEP Camp and class sizes are limited. We will make every attempt of fulfil all requests, however if enrollment capacity is exceeded, you will be placed on a waiting list and notified if space opens up.

2018 STEP Camp Workshop
Auto/Small Engines
Instructor: Kevin Barlow
Students will learn about and complete some basic automotive maintenance and repair techniques. They will perform these on shop vehicles using standard transportation tools and equipment.
Baking (Culinary Arts)
Instructor: Sue Dunn-Van Bakel
Students will learn about food preparation, measurement, mixing, and cooking using all the tools in a standard foods classroom.
Students will get to enjoy their work once complete!
Hairstyling & Theatrical Make-up
Instructor: Kathleen Von Ewe
Students will learn about techniques, styles, and application of the basics in aesthetics and hairstyling. Students will get a chance to practice on one another to test their skills!
Sewing (New this year!)
Instructor: Nicole Merkel
Students will learn the skills needed to operate a sewing machine and be shown some basic techniques used to repair clothing. At the end of the workshop students will leave with a completed project they have made.
Graphic Design
Instructor: Craig Shurgold
Students will learn and be introduced to the basics of using graphic design software. They will use the program(s) to "recreate" history and change or enhance existing photos/images. They will have an opportunity to print share their final designs with the group.
Engineering and Design
Instructor: Keith Donnelly
Students will complete a problem-solving challenge while investigating and analyzing various solutions to the prescribed challenge. They will build their solutions and test against the other designs! Small hand tools and woodworking equipment may be used and related safety covered.
Welding
Instructor: Steve Manzo
Students will learn basic welding techniques using appropriate tools, equipment and materials. They will learn how many things are manufactured and get to take home a completed project.
Woodworking
Instructor: Mark Flanagan
Students will learn some introductory skills and techniques working with wood. Using appropriate tools, equipment and materials, students will build their own project to take home.

Parent Information:

  • Payment must be received no later than June 29, 2018 (see payment details on registration form). Every session and day will begin will thorough safety instructions and demonstrations.
  • All classes are taught by qualified instructors and volunteer helpers are always welcome. If you would like to help out in a classroom, please include this information when registering.
  • Please remember that the students will be working in fully equipped technical areas. Please ensure they are dressed appropriately (no shorts, skirts, baggy clothing, open toed shoes).
  • Cell phones and/or iPods/ear buds are not permitted to be used in shop areas.
  • Please pack a brown bag lunch for your child each day (non-refrigerated). STEP Camp and St. Michael CSS are NOT peanut free zones.
  • Classes start at 8am each day. Registration opens at 7:15am, please arrive no later than 7:45am to register.
  • All classes will start with a thorough safety lesson. We stress SAFETY FIRST!
  • We take photos during STEP Camp to add to our online photo gallery and to use in future promotional materials. Local media may also be onsite during STEP Camp taking pictures for publication. If you do not want your child to be included in any photos that will be published either through TTG or the Media, please let us know when you register online.
  • Please also note on registration:
    • If you will require busing from St Anne's in Clinton, from St. James in Seaforth or from Mitchell District High School in Mitchell - All drops offs and picks up are by the Main doors at the secondary schools.
    • If your son/daughter has special medical needs, e.g. medication, please make sure you have contacted the camp coordinators in advance and have noted this on your registration form. Please send all necessary medical supplies that your son or daughter will need with them to have on hand to used at their own discretion.
  • Cancellation Policy: An administrative fee of 15% is charged for any withdrawals. A refund of 85% will be given if a registrant withdraws within a minimum of 5 business days prior to the workshop. Following this, fees are non-refundable
