The General Machinist Apprenticeship program consists of on-the-job and in-school training. Generally, the time frame to become competent in the trade of General Machinist is three years, which consists of 8000 hours (7280 on-the-job-training and 720 hours in-school training).
On-the-Job Training: Apprentices gain on-the job training experience at their place of employment. The skills (set out by the trade’s Apprenticeship Training Standard) are competencies recognized by the industry as essential to the practice of the trade. As competencies are developed, the apprentice’s sponsor (employer) signs the relevant sections of the training standard to indicate that the apprentice has met the individual training objectives by demonstrating the skills required.
In-School Training: Technical Training Group (TTG) is a Training Delivery Agent (106A) for the in-school portion of the General Machinist (429A) Apprenticeship program. The program is funded in part by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD).
General Machinist Level 1 is included as part of Precision Machining and Tooling Level 1 Common Core, which also includes Tool and Die Maker (430A), Mould Maker (431A), Pattern Maker (443A), Machine-Tool Builder and Integrator (430M), and Tool/Tool Maker (630T).
This program includes three levels of theoretical training. Regular evaluations and testing of the Apprentices’ knowledge and skills are conducted throughout the training to ensure that all apprentices have achieved the learning outcomes identified in the General Machinist Curriculum Standard.
TTG’s in-school training is delivered annually and is a part-time evening (Level 1 only in 2024) delivery model which runs from October - May. This training is delivered in Stratford, Ontario at Stratford District Secondary School (SDSS) 428 Forman Ave, (TTG Site 1).

TTG delivers the in-school component of this Apprenticeship Program as required by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) In addition, the MLITSD requires employers to deliver the greater proportion of apprenticeship training on-the-job.

Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG)

The Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) is a one-time, taxable cash grant with a lifetime maximum amount of $2,000 per person for registered apprentices who complete their apprenticeship training and obtain their journeyperson certification. Depending on the availability of Ministry funding each year, TTG offers Pre-Apprenticeship Multiple Trades Exposure Programs. These programs can provide an opportunity to gain the skills required to secure employment in the skilled trades and help set you on the path towards securing an apprenticeship. STEP 1 - Once you have an employer sponsor, you need to set up an account and submit an apprenticeship application online through the Skilled Trades Ontario Portal (STOP). Visit https://www.skilledtradesontario.ca/skilled-trades-ontario-portal/
STEP 2 - If your application is approved, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) will:
STEP 3 – When in-class schooling becomes available, you and your employer will receive your Offer of Classroom Training from the MLITSD by email. This will occur approximately 90 days prior to the start of the in-class training. Please reference this Offer of Classroom Training to locate your apprentice ID, class number, training dates, location, classroom fee and ETC. *Note this offer from the MLITSD does NOT include TTG’s Books and Supplies fee.
